Grasslands and junipergroves

Whether in the fullness of summer or autumnal tranquility - the landscape around Pappenheim is a unique blend of an ancient cultural landscape and diverse nature.

The most beautiful landscapes are the picturesque juniper heaths and grasslands in Zimmern. These run from the valley up to the plateau. These so-called steppe heath, has emerged since the Middle Ages, by intensive deforestation and sheep rearing. They are the botanical treasures of Altmühl valley.

Partially, by nature, they are still grazed by sheep and in this way, maintained and preserved. Through the spreading forest, the unique flora would be ousted. Below you will find: silver thistle, grass lily, “carex humilis”, and the small hawkweed.
