Göhren

It is not without reason that the picturesque village of Göhren is one of the winners of the competition "Our village shall become more beautiful".
In the idyllic village pond you can gaze at the sky and after a few steps you can dive into your relaxation at the edge of the forest...

The impact of the Ries meteorite 14.7 million years ago was of decisive importance for the formation of the landscape. Not only did it blow out the Ries crater with a diameter of about 25 km, it also hurled and pushed the shattered and torn rocks up to 22 km away - to about 2 km east of Göhren, where they show a thickness of more than 50 m as so-called Bunte Brekzie. These are the Ries debris masses furthest away from the Ries.
In the process, local limestones and especially clays from a freshwater lake that existed here for a time were also carried away, which is why the deposits of the variegated breccia show waterlogging and are used as grassland. The source of the stone well also owes its yield to this meteorite impact.
